Your Grandfather Frost figures will become more than a Christmas tradition in your home – we believe your unique Russian carvings will be on display the year round.
Grandfather Frost is the holiday gift-giver and is known by many names. In Russia he is “Ded Moroz” and he has an official residence in the town of Veliky Ustyug. He is also referred to as Father Frost, Grandpa Frost, or Father Christmas. He carries a magical staff and drives a three-horse troika.
A carved wooden Santa is usually made by several artists. The artist who carves the figure is generally not the artist who paints it. The signature on the figure is from the artist who has painted the piece and brought it to life with splendid results. Particular attention has been given to the detail of the face, the eyes, and the facial shading.
The wood used for the carvings of Grandfather Frost is from the Linden tree (often called lime tree). Select wood is dried for a minimum of two years. The drying process assures that your carving will not crack or split when maintained in a reasonable environment. The style of painting on each woodcarving is unique to that artist. In addition to painted flowing robes and jewels, the figure may portray scenes from the winter season or characters from Russian folklore. It is common to see carvings of Grandfather Frost painted with characters such as the Snow Maiden (his granddaughter “Snegurochka,” angels, children (representing the coming year), or the traditional Troika – the three horse sleigh.
